As many of you may know,recently our beloved friend and poet Mathieu Paul Allsup took a 4 story plunge from the roof of a building,as such he will be out of work for at least two months so Get Born has come out of retirement for one night only in order to raise some money to keep Mathieus' bills paid while he is unable to work.

This reading is being held in collaboration with Chance Operations,Bad Shoe,and Voices From The Underground and will feature readings by Erin Wiles,Joseph Sulier,Tony Renner,Matthew Freeman,Elly Herget,Mathieu Paul,Joe Wetteroth,Bill Foster,Julia Gordon-Bramer,and Philip Gounis(?),with musical intermissions by Jacob Cohen(solo hip-hop),and two more TBA.Please come out and help us raise some money for a great person/poet.Admission is $5.oo.

We have an enormous line-up this year. There are 16 of us presenting the message of the Beats. It will be a challenge to get everybody up to fit into three hours, but we will do it. I've arranged to start the show at 7 p.m. We'll need to keep each reading under ten minutes. I am excited about this year, because we have a solid core of powerful performers that have graced the stage in the past: K. Curtis Lyle, Michael Castro, Ann Haubrich, Bob Putnam, Phil Gounis, Chris King, Ken Brown. Stefene Russell returns to us this year and is part of a sizable group of women that will present their selections, including Haubrich, Erin Wiles, Lauren Keefer and Mary Fisher. Also returning are a powerful contingent from the Get Born Readings scene: Joseph Sulier, Brock Walker, Mathieu Paul and Ken "the jokes are in there, Kids" Brown. Joining us for the first time are Sean Arnold, Lauren Keefer, Mary Fisher and Typewriter Tim Jordan.
We'll be missing a couple folks this year due to life and death and time constraints, etc...
I know that there are many who have performed in the past that I am not including here, but have to mention that I will always miss those that joined us since I've been at the helm of the event and brought it to the stage: Hunter Brumfield (R.I.P), Ben Hanna, Bob Wilcox, Agnes Wilcox, Joe Wetteroth, Mariah Richardson, Greg Hazleton Kevin McCameron and Cynthia Sutton, to name a few.
There will be many highlights this year, but perhaps the most theatrical of the event will be that of Tim Jordan in his persona BodyBag Man while channeling William S. Burroughs.
Yep.
I've decided to deliver Brion Gysin to the stage and will do so before or after Master Jordan's performance.

BROCK WALKER
.... is native Saint Louisan residing currently in historic North Saint Louis city with Holden
(the cat, not Caulfied) and is currently unpublished as far as he knows. He has been rumored to read with 'Get Born' and looks back on his slam days with one squinty eye, but not unfondly. Currently he cannot pay rent but he is smiling all the same, having a new perspective and/or (possibly) philosophy on life after adventuring the West Coast for the first time in his life. He is also proficient in the trombone, bass guitar, currently is teaching himself the violin, and may play for you when the notes come out properly so that he may communicate by way of something more holy than words (music, that is).

We're heading out on the road again!That's right folks,the Get Born camp featuring Joseph Sulier,Brock Walker,Jim Swill,and Mathieu Paul will be hitting the road again in December!Starting with a send off reading at Duffs in St.Louis on December 1st,we'll be heading East again to Chicago,Cincinnati,Connecticut,Richmond,Philadelphia,Baltimore,and ending with a few days in New York city,we'll have concrete details on all of these readings very soon right here under our "shows" section.We're very excited to head out again,excited to be a part of one of the first ever readings held at Phillys' newest bookstore,Juan & Juanitas,which was recently opened by our good friends at Heartworm Press.
BUT,before all that madness we have a couple readings coming up in St.Louis including the annual Day of The Dead Beats on Saturday November 1st.That's going down at 8:00 P.M. at The Way Out Club(2525 S. Jefferson,St.Louis MO.)and features Get Born readers Mathieu Paul,Brock Walker,and Joe Wetteroth.
Then the following Monday November 3rd Get Born will be hosting a poetry open mic that is open to everyone!This starts at 7:00 P.M. and costs just two measley bones!.

St. Louis, MO. - On Saturday, November 1, at 8 PM, local literature lovers will crowd into the hallowed Way Out Club to celebrate the poetry of the Beat Generation in the eleventh annual "Day of the Dead Beats" reading. The event is open to those interested in the poetry, writing and spirit of The Beat Generation. Doors will open at 7 p.m.

Since 1997, the year both Allen Ginsberg and William S. Burroughs passed into the afterlife, the local "Day of the Dead Beats" evening has carried the torch for the radical and transcendental literary subculture pioneered by the Beat poets.
By far the largest yearly Beat celebration in the region, "Day of the Dead Beats" invites local writers, actors, musicians and personalities to give live readings of the works of authors such as
Diane Di Prima, Ann Waldman, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Herbert Huncke, Kenneth Patchen, Bob Kaufmann, Jack Kerouac, Charles Bukowski, Gregory Corso, Michael McClure, Kenneth Rexroth and Philip Lamantia.

The line-up is stacked with some of St. Louis' better known writers, both young and more-established. Joining in on the fun for only the second time will be a few of the Get Born readings poets, including Brock Walker, Joe Wetteroth, Erin Wiles and Ken Brown and writer, editor, record-producer and movie director, Chris King.

Other returning luminaries will be: Michael Castro, Philip Gounis, K. Curtis Lyle, Ann Haubrich, Chris King, Bob Wilcox, Agnes Wilcox, Greg Hazleton and the event organizer since 2004—Brett Underwood.

The event, started by Paul Thiel and others in 1997 following the deaths of Allen Ginsberg and William S. Burroughs, has continued every year since.
Its title is a play on words incorporating the Mexican holiday, "Day of the Dead" ("Día de los Muertos") and is a sort of remembrance of those who are gone but not forgotten

Dancing Words A Festival of Written and Spoken Words This April 17-20 in Athens, OH, a three day festival celebrates the art of words, in writing and on stage. The breadth of writing and words spans from prose to poem, from storyteller to performance poet to spoken word artist. This festival will feature published authors and poets from the region and nation. Writers will perform and sell chapbooks. The artists will be available to converse, cavort, and sign books. The festival will take place in three different venues, culminating Saturday, April 19 at 9 pm with a spoken word performance at Donkey Coffee and Espresso. Featuring writers from New York, Athens, and St. Louis, Dancing Words proudly presents Jon Sands, a traveling word artist and son of Athens, as the festival’s headliner. Hi folks,been a while since we've had any news to present to you.First off there is a new book available by Jim Swill entitled "The Great Equalizer",he will be posting ordering info. and a more detailed description within the next day or so.Secondly we have a reading coming up on the 4th of February,please check below for further info..We've decided to change up the format of the Duffs readings a bit in order to trim some of the fat,from now on all readers will have a time limit that will not exceed 5 minutes,the last reading went on much longer than it should have so we've tweaked it a bit in order to prevent you,the audience,from total boredom.Other things in the works include a possible reading at White Flag Art Gallery in March,a reading tour of the West Coast in the Summer,and a new book from Joseph Sulier' in the very near future.Please keep checking back to this blog for future updates.

As you can see above we are having silkscreened posters made for our tour by the pride of the Southside himself Don Beasley www.myspace.com/goddoesnotbelieveinme .The photo above is just a preliminary print,there will be a picture up of the finished product as soon as we get em'.Also completed is the 2007 Get Born anthology,all 4 issues compiled into one book,96 pages in all,along with some extra goodies.We are currently looking into printing of these into book form in time for our tour in November,more details on that as they manifest.

Up next,on Monday October 1st @ Duffs Restaurant (392 N. Euclid)is our next formal reading,more details are below.After the reading there is an after party being thrown at Friendlys Bar and Grill(3503 Roger, St. Louis MO 63116).This will start around 9:30 and will feature different poets and more music.The cost is 3$ if you attend the Duffs reading as well and are stamped,otherwise It's 5$ and they feature penny pitchers all night long,should stand to be an excellent evening of poetry,music,and plenty of booze.

Alright folks,the deal is done.Thanks to Karen Duffy and the wonderful folks at Duffs Restaurant in The Central West End,we will be hosting the next Get Born reading Monday April 9th at Duffs.So as not to conflict with the show at The Slaughterhouse on the same night we will be starting at 5 sharp and ending around 8:30.Please get in touch with me as soon as humanly possible if you would be interested in reading and if you are in the St.Louis area please repost this and spread the word to everyone you know!If this goes well it could mean regular readings at Duffs for us!

GET BORN:

So,as many of you may or may not know the Typo Cafe will be closing during the second week of March.This poses a dillema as far as holding future readings goes because A.It was all ages B.They were not in the interests of making any kind of money,and C.It was basically the perfect atmosphere to host such a thing.Now,I'm looking into possibly holding one at Dressels and maybe Duffs as well.If anyone has any idea at all about other venues that would host such a thing please let me know ASAP.In other news,I've recently run into a huge monetary set-back and as a result Get Born #2 may not be coming out as soon as expected,I'm going to try to make it down to this 5 cent copy place sometime this week.If anyone would like to volunteer to drive me that would be very helpful and much appreciated.I'll keep you updated as to the progress of both.Thank you.

The show last night culminated in 1 broken toe,1 broken micstand,and countless disappointed onlookers.In other words the evening was a smash hit,until the 11th,keep your dicks dry.
